I would use Canidae and give him supplements.
Royal Canin also has breed specific foods, I have bought some of those, that might be worth looking into.
I would definitely give him MSM and Glucosamine. You will probably get better help from a food store or alternative medical prrofessional than you will get from a vet for this. (just my opinion)
I just read an article on that. Liver is supposed to really help. Raw or cooked.
mine’s 10 and can no longer leap in the car— she waits for you to lift her in and she is a big dog —it requires all my strength. She gets dog biscuits ,canned dog food and raw bones and the vet has said her teeth are really good so we have been doing OK he also advised that there are good medications for dogs with arthritis and injections if it gets really bad. It is summer now so should be a bit better. It is important that the joints are kept warm. I think you can also give them aspirin for pain ease but it would be better to talk with the vet or perhaps a pet store can give you some advice .At present my dog is not getting any medication. I am feeding her a little less as any extra weight is not a good thing and she is getting only light exercise and not going into any jumping competitions so no stress for me or her .
Our son-in-laws 4 year old retriever has arthritic hips. He adds glucosamine to her diet. She also gets cortisone injections anually. She is very active, loved to run.
get him a good quality food w/ glucosimine (I’m sure that’s not spelled correctly ) in it. http://www.naturapet.com is my favorite website for healthy foods. I’m sure they have something for joints. there are also several brands of "treats" w/ glucosimine in them that you could give to your dog several times a day that really do seem to help. I hope your doggie feels better =]
If he has arthritis, no dog food is going to help. There are foods containing glucosamine, but in such small amounts it wouldn’t help any dog who needs it.
First, your dog should be x-rayed to find out how serious his arthritis is. Your vet can then tell you how high a dosage of glucosamine chondroitin he should be on. My vet also recommended 400 mg of Devils’ Claw for 2 of my greys who are having problems and it’s made a huge difference (combined with glucosamine chondroitin).
It’s better for your dog not to wait – he doesn’t need to be in pain.
